The Inca Trail, the train route, altitude acclimatisation, and the sunrise moment that will stop your breath.
Machu Picchu is one of those places where the reality exceeds the expectation — and the expectation is already extraordinary. Built by the Inca Empire in the 15th century, 2,430 metres above sea level.
Getting There: Two Routes
The Inca Trail (4 Days) — The classic pilgrimage. 43km of mountain path through cloud forest and high-altitude passes. Permits sell out months in advance — book at least 6 months ahead.
The Train Route — Fly to Cusco, acclimatise for 2 nights, take Peru Rail to Aguas Calientes. Morning buses take you up to the citadel.
Altitude Acclimatisation
This is non-negotiable. Cusco sits at 3,400m. Spend at least 2 full days in Cusco before doing any significant elevation gain. Drink coca tea, eat light, stay hydrated.
Inside Machu Picchu
Entry is now timed and requires advance online booking. The classic sunrise experience means catching the first bus from Aguas Calientes at 5:30am. Stay until mid-morning when the marble terraces glow gold.
Do it. Whatever it takes to get there. Do it.
